Why is Aluminum Welding Difficult?
Aluminum is a widely used metal in manufacturing. Its non-corrosive, lightweight, and aesthetically pleasing properties make it an ideal welding material. However, these same properties also complicate aluminum welding.
Aluminum is a soft and highly sensitive material with a robust oxide layer on its surface. In the molten state, aluminum is easily contaminated by impurities, leading to porous and weak joints in the weld.
Aluminum and its alloys have an extremely strong affinity for oxygen; pure aluminum has a melting point of 1200°F (650°C), while its oxides have a melting point as high as 3700°F (2037°C). Because the melting temperature of the oxides is about 2500°F (1370°C) higher than that of aluminum itself, these oxides must be removed before welding.
Furthermore, aluminum's high thermal conductivity and low melting point result in a smaller workability window than other metals, making it prone to burn-through. Combined with the difficulty in judging weld progress and quality, aluminum becomes a challenging material to handle.
