What is CNC machining?

CNC machining is a manufacturing technology that uses computer-generated instructions (called G-codes) to remove material. There are two basic types of CNC machines: one in which the tool rotates and cuts a stationary material, and another in which the tool remains stationary while the material rotates. Building on these basic principles, more complex CNC machines have been developed to meet diverse machining needs.

How It Works

While each CNC machine operates and is programmed slightly differently, they generally follow a similar process. Here's how it works:

Designing a CAD Model: First, an engineer or designer creates a computer-aided design (CAD) model in 3D format, specifically designed for the CNC machine to ensure proper manufacturing.

Converting the CAD File: Once the CAD file is created, it's converted into a computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software package, which generates the G-code that the CNC machine can read.

Next, the operator prepares the CNC machine by inspecting it for defects or wear. This step ensures the equipment is functioning properly. They then add the necessary tools, or have the machine do this automatically, and place the stock material correctly.

Once the material is set up, the G-code is prepared, and the appropriate tool is selected, machining can begin. The machining cycle will start, and the workpiece or tool will move according to the design, cutting the material until the machining is complete. In some cases, the operator may need to move the workpiece throughout the process to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

Computer Numerical Control Lathes

CNC lathes consist of a spindle and toolholder. They operate by moving a cutting tool through cylindrical material that rotates about the spindle. More complex machines, such as Swiss-type lathes, are capable of processing non-cylindrical materials. Lathes are typically used to produce products with a consistent design along a long axis.

CNC Milling

CNC milling machines are equipped with a tool spindle and a worktable with a vise to securely hold the material. Machines with more automated features often have pneumatic vises and robotic arms to move the workpiece. Manually configured machines are the operator's responsibility.

Once the tool is mounted on the spindle, it moves in the X, Y, and Z axes, depending on the machine's sophistication, to complete the desired machining operation.
