CNC milling removes material from a workpiece by rotating a cutting tool to produce finished parts and products. This manufacturing process is suitable for a variety of materials, including metals, polymers, wood, and glass. Generally speaking, CNC milling systems have three linear degrees of freedom: X, Y, and Z axes, which allow them to achieve first-class accuracy and detail. Protolabs Network also offers more advanced 5-axis systems, which also allow the tool head and machining bed (A and B axes) to rotate. 5-axis CNC machines are able to produce parts with high geometric complexity without the need for multiple machine setups.
3-axis and 3+2-axis CNC milling machines each have different maximum part sizes, depending on the machine design and manufacturer. Generally, these two machines have the lowest startup costs and are suitable for producing parts with relatively simple geometries. 3-axis machines are mainly used for basic machining, while 3+2-axis machines provide additional flexibility and are able to handle more complex shapes, although still within a certain size range.
