CNC design guidelines

One challenge often encountered when designing CNC machined parts is the lack of industry-specific standards. As CNC machine and tool manufacturers continue to improve their technological capabilities, the limits of what is possible continue to expand. The following table summarizes the recommended and feasible values for some common features in CNC machined parts.

Deep cavity milling: A cavity is considered deep if its depth is greater than six times the tool diameter. Using specialized tools (maximum depth: 35 cm with a 1-inch diameter end mill), a tool diameter to cavity depth ratio of 30:1 can be achieved.

End mills have a flat or slightly rounded lower cutting edge. Other floor radii can be machined with ball-end tools. It is good design practice to use the recommended value, as this is the machinist's preferred choice.

Machining of holes with non-standard diameters

For holes with non-standard diameters, end mills must be used for machining. In this case, the maximum cavity depth limit applies and the recommended maximum depth value should be consulted. For holes deeper than the typical value, special drills should be used for machining, with a minimum diameter of 3mm. Blind holes machined with drills have a conical bottom (135 degree angle), while holes machined with end mills have a flat bottom.

In CNC machining, there is no particular preference between through holes and blind holes.

Threads are cut with taps, external threads with dies. Taps and dies can be used to cut threads up to M2. CNC threading tools are common and preferred by machinists as they limit the risk of tap breakage. CNC thread cutters can cut threads up to M6.

For threads in blind holes cut with a tap (i.e. all threads smaller than M6), an unthreaded length equal to 1.5 times the nominal diameter should be added to the bottom of the hole. When CNC threading tools can be used (i.e. threads larger than M6), the hole can be threaded through its length.

Most machine shops can accurately machine cavities and holes using tools less than 2.5 mm (0.1") in diameter. Anything below this limit is considered micromachining. Special tools (micro drills) and expertise are necessary to machine these features because the physics of the cutting process change at this scale. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid their use unless absolutely necessary.

Our tolerances are 2768 Medium or Fine. If tolerances are not specified, the manufacturing partner will use the selected 2768 grade.

Tolerances define the boundaries of acceptable dimensions. Achievable tolerances vary based on the basic dimensions and geometry of the part. The above values are reasonable guidelines.

Engraved text is preferred over embossed text because less material is removed. A sans serif font (such as Arial or Verdana) with a minimum size of -20 is recommended. Many CNC machines are pre-programmed for these fonts.
